Art and Design Curriculum

Art and Design runs for Year 9 - 11 students. Please see Fine Art for details of the course taught during Year 12 and Year 13.

Year 9

In Year 9 the three areas of study (Art, Graphics and Textiles) will be taught in a rotational basis, not necessarily in the order listed below.

Autumn Term
Students will develop a culture inspired project with a focus on drawing, painting and mixed media. Students will analyse and evaluate through contextual studies, referencing the work from artists and designers. Homework will be set as an integral part of the unit of work and will support the student’s creative journey.

Spring Term
During this term students will produce a range of work in response to a textiles and fashion brief. They will they will focus on fashion illustration producing work inspired by nature. Homework will be set as an integral part of the unit of work and will support the student’s creative journey.

Summer Term
During the course of this term students will experience a range of graphics skills and processes. Students will analyse and evaluate through contextual studies, referencing the work of designers and typographers. Homework will be set as an integral part of the unit of work and will support the student’s creative journey.

Year 10 (exam board: AQA)

Autumn Term
Students will develop their understanding of the formal elements of art and design. They will explore analyse and research the theme as part of unit one Portfolio (60% of GCSE). Contextual work will include research on contemporary artists.

Spring Term
Students will embark on the research aspect of their second themed project based on either Lost and Found or Structures (portfolio).

Summer Term
Students continue to develop their second project through design ideas and experimentation (portfolio).

Year 11 (exam board: AQA)

Autumn Term
Students will build on their portfolio of work, focusing on the development of a final piece for project two.

Spring Term
Students will embark on their (approx.) 9-week preparation period for their unit 2 project of work which is externally set by AQA (40%). This is finalised by a 10-hour exam during which they will produce a final outcome.

Summer Term
Finally, students will revisit their portfolio work to complete and refine for deadline (28 April 2017).
