Engineering - Year 12

GCS Applied Engineering (Edexcel – 5RM01 5RM02) – Year 12

GCS Applied engineering cover 3 units within the year, taught in parallel.
Unit 1, Engineering Materials, processes and Techniques, Students are taught about a range of materials and processes and how these can be used to manufacture high quality products (externally assessed)
Unit 2, The role of the engineer. Students investigate the role of the professional engineer responsible fro the design or manufacture of an engineered product or service (internally assessed)
Unit 3, Students will produce a design solution to a clients brief and demonstrate its effectiveness through developing a prototype.

Half Term 1 (September - October)
Unit 1
  • Introduction to the course
Unit 2
  • Introduction to activities undertaken by design and /or manufacturing engineers.
  • Current available technologies used by engineers
  • Legislation and standards influencing design and /or manufacturing engineers.
  • Health and safety standards influencing design and /or manufacturing engineers.
  • Evaluation of the performance of the engineered product or service.
  • Possible modifications.
  • Industrial Visit : Agree an engineering company to visit and arrange the date of the visit

  • Analysis of design brief. Identifying research and design needs

Field Trips/Visits: Students will need to make contact with an Engineer within an engineering company, for Role of the Engineer
Half Term 2 (November - December)

  • Materials and groupings.(Metals, Alloys, Polymers and Elastomers)

  • Industrial Visit – 1st Week of November
  • Lessons on report writing and assessment for each of the unit sections.
Unit 3
  • Generation of design ideas
  • Engineering drawings (both CAD and hand drawn)
