Duke of Edinburgh
A weekend at the end of March saw eight students take part in a Duke of Edinburgh's Award Silver expedition practice in the Lake District. Friday night was spent in Helvellyn Youth Hostel, checking kit, studying maps and repacking rucksacks. On Saturday morning the steep path up to Greenside was rapidly climbed in spite of the heavy rucksacks. The ground levelled out to reveal a wide open valley surrounded by snow covered peaks. A suitable sheltered spot was chosen to pitch camp then the group set off to practice their navigation skills on a climb to the summit of Raise. Clear skies let the Spring sun shine down but resulted in temperatures dropping to well below freezing after dark. Following dinner cooked on Trangia stoves a brisk night walk to the summit of Sheffield Pike warmed everyone up before a very chilly night under canvas. The early start on Sunday morning was a struggle for some but the thought of getting home was a good motivator. D of E Leader Mr. Cornish was impressed with the way all the students had worked individually and together to successfully complete their training.
