A Level Success Continues

August brought another year of excellent achievement for QEHS sixth formers. Well over half of all 'A' level grades were A*, A or B with around 20 students gaining straight A*/As. Point scores per student and per entry were also higher for the second year running reaching levels well above national averages.

This success meant in the region of 180 QEHS students being able to progress to universities across the United Kingdom including Oxford and Cambridge.

GCSE Results bring Another Record

For the second year running QEHS students have achieved record results in GCSE and equivalent qualifications. Over 74% of students gained 5 or more A*-C grades including English and maths, beating last year's record by 2%. The proportion of entries gaining A* or A grades was also high, beating national averages with 18 students gaining at least 6 A* grades.

The school has been congratulated by senior education officers of Northumberland Council for becoming the highest performing school in the county.

About QEHS

Neil Morrison

In 1599 Queen Elizabeth I granted the people of Hexham a charter to establish a grammar school because of their 'outstanding eagerness to promote good learning'.

Over 400 years later Queen Elizabeth High School continues to flourish as an 'outstanding' (Ofsted 2007) community school, educating over 1,300 students of whom 465 are in the Sixth Form. The school is a specialist performing arts college and also gained specialist science college status in 2008. Northumberland LEA currently operates a three-tier system, so QEHS has students aged between 13 and 18 years old.

Hexham Partnership

The school's official catchment area is a large one, extending north/south from Humshaugh to Blanchland and east/west from Riding Mill to Hexham. A significant number of students from outside this area also attends the school.  The Hexham Partnership is a strong one.  QEHS is federated with Hexham Middle School. This means that there is one governing body for both schools.

All of the schools in the partnership are listed below with the headteacher and a link to the website (where available) of each school.
