Performing Arts

Artsmark Gold Award

QEHS is a specialist performing arts college and holds an Artsmark Gold Award. Specialist status has allowed us to:

  • employ specialist teaching and support staff
  • improve facilities and equipment in music, drama and dance
  • introduce new courses in dance and the performing arts
  • work in new ways with partnership schools and our community

Work With Professionals

We host workshops and residencies by a wide variety of groups and individuals working in visual art, music, dance and drama. We also work closely with local arts organisations such as Queen's Hall Arts Centre, Dance City and the Sage Gateshead.

Work in the Community

The show reel on this page provides you with examples of a small number of projects that were undertaken in the partnership covering early years music, song writing, video installation, improvised dance and improvised music.

Capital Developments

We have also been able to build and equip a music recording studio with support from Northumberland LEA and Northumbria Water's Pipeline Fund.

The official opening of 'The Theatre' took place on 14 March 2007 with a celebration of student performance commemorating many years of music, dance and drama performances. 'The Theatre' offers a 100 seat auditorium with state of the art lighting, sound and projection equipment. The venue is available for community use and is ideal for performances and presentations. Technical support is also available and use can be combined with The Charter Conference Centre and Restaurant.

Extra Curricular

A huge range of music ensembles and groups meet every week.

In drama, Youth Theatre and Junior Theatre meet all year round, putting on three performances each year.

Dance workshops are offered each month, each one tackling a different genre.

There are many visits to concerts, plays, exhibitions and dance performances.

Science

As a school with science specialism, QEHS offers a range of science courses at GCSE, from Single Award to Triple Award. The department has a track record for innovation. We were a 21st Century Science (C21S) pilot school, part of the Learning Skills in Science (LSS) pilot, as well as offering the Advancing Physics A level course and the Salter's Chemistry 'A' level course as well as an increasingly popular Applied AS/A2 course.

Science specialism has allowed us to work with science and technology organisations to run a variety of events from national lecture tours to a Year 11 STEM careers day. We have worked with partner schools on number of projects, including enquiry based learning. We have a Higher Level Teaching Assistant in the department who is able to work with students to improve their progress.

Science is taught in specialist biology, chemistry and physics laboratories, many of which have been refurbished and upgraded in recent years. There is also a dedicated computer room to support science teaching, which is used heavily in the A level physics course. Most laboratories are equipped with multimedia equipment.
