Dewey Decimal Classification

Most libraries use the Dewey System to arrange their books in subject order. Each book or video in the LRC has a special number (called a Class Number) that shows what it is about and where it is kept.

The Dewey Decimal System divides information into ten main areas:

000 - 009 General
100 - 199 Philosophy
200 - 299 Religion
300 - 399 Social Sciences
400 - 499 Languages
500 - 599 Sciences
600 - 699 Technology
700 - 799 Arts
800 - 899 Literature
900 - 999 History and Geography

Each of these areas are then divided into ten sub-sections for example:

Social Science
300 Social Science
310 General Statistics
320 Politics
330 Economics
340 Law
350 Public Administration
360 Social Welfare
370 Education
380 Commerce
390 Social Customs

Each of these sub-sections is then divided up again, for example:

370 General Education
371 Schools and Teaching
372 Primary Education
373 Secondary Education
374 Adult Education
375 Curriculum

Further numbers can be added after the decimal point for more specific subjects, for example:

371.30281 Study Skills
372.87 Music in primary schools

In general, the longer the class number, the more specific the subject.
