On Monday 6th March teams from the Hexham Schools Partnership competed in a regional Team Mathematics event organised by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust. The UKMT exists to promote challenging and enjoyable mathermatical activities for a wide range, and the event was part of a nationwide competition. Students in school years 8 and 9 were eligible, with year 9 students being provided by Queen Elizabeth High School and year 8 students by Hexham, Corbridge and St. Joeseph's Middle Schools. Three teams were entered, each made up of two Year 8 student from one of the middle schools, partnered by two students from QEHS who had been former pupils at that middle school. Some friendly rivalry between the three teams led to a set of outstanding results. A total of 27 teams from the Newcastle and Northumberland region took part, and the team of present and former students of Hexham Middle School finished first! The team of part and present Corbridge Middle School were second, and the team from St. Joseph's Middle School were also highly placed. In winning the event, the victorious team from Hexham have earned the right to represent the region at the national finals of the UKMT Team Challenge 2006 in London in July. The Corbridge team may also qualify for the national finals as highly placed runners-up. Congratulations to all participants!"
